The Battle Ground City Council welcomed their newest members and selected a Mayor and Deputy Mayor at their first meeting of 2022.
New and returning members took their ceremonial oaths of office at the January 3 meeting:
- Troy McCoy, elected to position No. 1 is serving his first term in office.
- Tricia Davis, elected to position No. 5 is serving her first term in office after being appointed to the vacated position in October of 2021.
- Adrian Cortes was re-elected to position No. 4 and is serving his 2nd consecutive term in office.
- Cherish DesRochers, re-elected to position No. 6, is serving her 2nd consecutive term in office. Prior to being elected to the position, she served as an appointed member of the council.
The four join sitting councilmembers Shane Bowman (Position No. 2), Shauna Walters (Position No. 3) and Philip Johnson (Position No. 7) who are currently serving the third of their four-year terms in office.
The council selected Philip Johnson to serve a two-year term as Mayor and Cherish DesRochers to serve as Deputy Mayor. The Mayor's duties, in addition to having the same authority and responsibilities of all councilmembers, are to preside at council meetings and to serve as the ceremonial representative of the council. The Deputy Mayor serves in that capacity should the Mayor be absent.
City councilmembers are elected at-large by voters to serve a four-year term. The council is responsible for the legislative function of the city such as establishing policy, passing local ordinances, approving budget appropriations, and developing an overall vision for the city.
Under the city's adopted Council-Manager form of government, the city council appoints a city manager to implement its policies, serve as advisor, and oversee administrative operations of the city.
